When Ford introduced the 428 Cobra Jet big-block V-8 engine in April 1968, Carroll Shelby added the new 335 HP muscle-car engine to his Shelby GT500 and identified the CJ-powered model by adding “KR”—for “King of the Road”—to the side stripes. This GT500KR convertible, Shelby No. 02315, is one of only 518 convertible produced at the end of the 1968 model year. Shipped new to Frank Cate Ford in Elk Grove, California, the Shelby GT500KR convertible features Shelby’s signature fiberglass hood, nose piece and trunk lid with built-in spoiler and horizontal tail lights. Delivered new in the rare combination of Wimbledon White with a saddle interior, the GT500KR is equipped with a C6 automatic transmission, 3.50:1 Traction-Lok differential, power steering, power front disc brakes, tilt steering column and Shelby/Cragar 5-spoke wheels with era-correct Goodyear Polyglas tires. The glovebox door has been autographed by Carroll Shelby.
